Universal Century is a dating system instituted by the first world wide terran government, the Earth Federation, retroactively based on when mankind first set foot on their own moon. By the time Cochrane made his last legendary flight, it was Universal Century 170. It's often noted by scholars of Terran pre-warp flight history of how Terra and the rest of the Sol System were reduced to bands of warlords, with no government to speak of in the system, before the flight of the Phoenix and First Contact with the Vulcans. To those with Terran heritage and backgrounds, this was a dark age, an unmentionable past that only sees light at the end of the tunnel with the story of the inventor of Warp Drive, the legendary Zephram Cochrane. But the actual history behind these innovative war machines goes much deeper than most people thing - most non-terrans are unaware the role that Mobile Suits played in the near holocaust of the human race, the titanic Space Wars that were raged in the Earth Sphere of the Sol System about 80 years. Peace advocates in dozens of systems bemoan the influence of anthropomorphic war machines, much like their predecessors bemoaned children playing with models of famous ships from the war. Today, children all across the Federation play with their mobile suit toys. UNIVERSAL CENTURIES - THE ROLE OF THE MOBILE SUIT IN THE DOMINION WAR As an example of what I mean, I'll present two settings that are absolute favorites of mine - Star Trek's Deep Space Nine setting and Mobile Suit Gundam's Universal Century. The point here is to pick and chose one setting's elements with another so as to create something greater than the whole. One setting might have authorial precedence over the other - in fact, this is expected. The challenge here is to integrate two settings so that the presence of one in another is seamless. RIFTS is one of my all time favorite gaming settings, as is Torg. But once you get past those hurdles, I find that crossover gaming is fun as hell - back when I used Trek elements in a Star Wars game that I ran several years ago, both I and the players had a ton of fun. Yes, crossover is silly and smashes our precious conceptions of characters and setting history into the dirt. You have been warned.Įver since I was a 5 year old and wondered why the Enterprise never stopped at the planet where the Lost In Space crew was to give them a lift home I've always been fascinated by crossover. Warning - If you are a canon purist, you will hate this thread, trust me.
